Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone had any feedback on Masters in Management Science Programs. Examples of Universities having these programs include Duke, Thunderbird, Stanford, etc.

How helpful are these programs in securing a job following the degree? Do employers actually consider this degree to be important? How much can it set you apart from other candidates? Is it worth it to go ahead and get this degree if you did not major in business and are having trouble in getting a job and don't want to get an MBA at this point in your career?

The program is similar to an MBA, but requires no work experience. This means the MSc in Management is more focused in theory, while the MBA is more focused on practice.

Hi Arpit,


Choosing between these two degrees depends upon why you want to pursue either of these degrees in first place. The MBA is a general broad degree covering a wide variety of business issues and training students for careers in managing any area of business.
The MS is a degree that concentrates study in a specific field, such as finance, accounting, taxation etc and trains students for careers in high level staff positions often involving research.
So MS degree would provide you focussed and concentrated information and MBA would be having wider subject range and you would study subjects regarding management also apart from accountancy or tax.
You should check in the respective industry on their recruitment pattern. If you think you would need and mba to flourish in that industry later then wise move is get work exp and go for an mba.

Thanks Kavita and Alex! I recently graduated in May with a non-business degree and thought this degree would give me an edge, as well as theory to help me secure a job. Of course I would go directly into a job but it has been difficult with the economy!
