These are the questions which I am unable to understand (involving variables):



Express your answer in terms of the variables given (X, Y, and possibly Z).

1. What number is X percent of Y?

2. X is what percent of Y?

3. What number is X% greater than Y?

4. X is what percent greater than Y?

5. X is what percent greater than Y percent of Z?


I need a detailed explanation. Thanks.

Let us take the number as N.

1. What number is X percent of Y?

N = X% of Y = (X/100)*Y = (XY)/100

2. X is what percent of Y?

X = N% of Y implies X = NY/100 or N = 100X/Y

3. What number is X% greater than Y?

N = X% + Y = (X/100) + Y

4. X is what percent greater than Y?

X = N% + Y or X = N/100 + Y or N = 100(X - Y)

5. X is what percent greater than Y percent of Z?

X = N% + Y% of Z = N/100 + (Y/100)Z = (N + YZ)/100
or N = 100X - YZ

I've practiced these so many times... still seem to elude me.
