MGMAT Classes--Worth the extra $$?

Hi guys,

I recently started studying for the GMAT a couple of weeks ago. I took a CAT and the score was very low, I haven't practiced Math in a few years so I wasn't surprised to see it that low.

So far I bought the Manhattan Foundations of GMAT Math & Verbal guides to begin the study process. I'm aiming to take the test in December but am on a tight deadline as most of the business schools I'm applying for have application deadlines of Feb/March (for the Fall 2014 programs). That doesn't give me a lot of time in case I need to retake the test again so I want to make sure to get the best score possible the first time

My question is, are the GMAT classes worth the extra money? I have about 3 months to prepare, so time is not really an issue but can the classes actually teach me the Math needed for the GMAT or are they more about strategy?

If anyone has had experience with these classes before, please let me know your feedback as it would be good to get advice before I decide to sign up

I'll share my two cents on this.

You will see links to three other versions at the top of the page --- choose the one that best fits your needs.

I am sure that the MGMAT classes are dynamite, the Cadillac of GMAT prep options, but they are expensive. I would definitely recommend the full MGMAT book set --- those books have tons of strategy as well as content (I don't know how much more strategy they teach in the live classes that is not covered in the book set). I would suggest that it is possible to get high quality prep for less. Here's a blog on a variety of high quality prep item, including the MGMAT books:

Hi SofiaC87,

Before making an investment in any particular course, you should take a look at whatever samples, free classes, etc. are offered by the course provider. Just about every GMAT Prep Company offers some type of demo, so that you can get a sense of the "personality" and "style" of the course before you buy it. Since prices vary (and some options are quite expensive), you should take advantage of the free material available to you, so that you can make a choice that matches your sensibilities and budget.

Hi SofiaC87,

Your are on the right track with the Foundations MGMAT books because your CAT score was low. MGMAT classes are good if you have a solid foundation knowledge, otherwise it is a waste of money. If I were you I would have used the next three months as follows:

1) First Month - Complete the Foundation books of MGMAT, complete the free 7 days trial of Magoosh and free DS class of EmpowerGMAT. Buy one of the Quant book of MGMAT to get access to free six MGMAT CATs. I am not sure if you get access to free six MGMAT CATs with any of the Foundation MGMAT book.

2) Second Month - Enroll in the Magoosh GMAT course for $99. Follow Magoosh's one month study plan. Take your second CAT before the start of Magoosh course. Complete 40 - 50 questions per day and redo all the questions you get wrong. Take your third CAT after 2 weeks to see your improvement and fourth CAT at the end of the month.

3) Third Month - Enroll in one month course of Empower GMAT for $99 and follow Rich's one month study plan and take CAT every week during this month.

Study : 2 - 4 hours daily for 6 days per week.

Time is precious and you have a numbers of GMAT courses available. All of them are quite good. Trust your instinct and follow the study plan of your course provider.
