According to Italy's top anti-Mafia prosecutor, the ailing mobster came to take refuge in Corleone, a town famous because of the “The Godfather” and near to those he most trusted.
  • a) the ailing mobster came to take refuge in Corleone, a town famous because of “The Godfather” and near to those he most trusted
    b) famous because of “The Godfather,” the ailing mobster came to take refuge in Corleone, a town near to those he most trusted
    c) the ailing mobster, famous because of “The Godfather,” came to take refuge in Corleone, a town near to those he most trusted
    d) near to those he most trusted, the ailing mobster came to take refuge in Corleone, a town famous because of “The Godfather”
    e) Corleone, famous because of “The Godfather,” was the town that the ailing mobster came to take refuge in because it was near to those he most trusted

Hi netigen,

Your questions really test the grey cells...

Anyway for me E is the answer as it is only sentence that makes sense but then about abt the modifier.....According to Italy's top anti-Mafia prosecutor

If u choose A or C, it seems the ailing mobster was the prosecutor...... but then same logic can apply to E

Can any expert pls reply?

OA is A but I went with C originally

A) town is famous because of the godfather
C) mobster is famous because of the godfather

both are possible situations but I think A is correct because C changes the meaning of the original sentence.

Grammatically both A and C are correct.

wow...that was tricky...i picked c at first but now i get why it is A. the answer could not be E. because of a modifier issue. in answer choice E, it says " Corleone, famous because of “The Godfather,” was the town that the ailing mobster came to take refuge in because it was near to those he most trusted"....ok remember the first part of the sentence that is not underlined, " According to Italy's top anti-Mafia prosecutor,...." Corleone is a name of a town, the first part of the sentence is describing a person, in this case, it is a mobster. so the correct answer has to be " According to Italy's top anti-Mafia prosecutor, the ailing mobster" hope that clears it up!

B,C - misplaced modifier. It is not mobster but town that is famous for god father
D - changes the meaning
E - wordy awkward. In short, instead of 'that' 'where' should be used because town is a place

A - parallel. famous ..... and near .....

"According......' should not be treated as modifier as it is not a participle - a verb+ing.
Niether it is adjective.

thnks,
