How to raise the bar in Verbal from 32.

by bubbliiiiiiii » Sun Sep 04, 2011 10:45 pm
Hi Guys,

I have been practicing verbal since quite a long time and when I give a GMAT Prep I am unable to cross 32/33 level. Could you guys please advice to proceed further?

Here is what I have done till date.

1. Reffered the MGMAT guide for verbal.
2. Finished OG and blue supplement.

My analysis from GMAT Prep's:
Breakup of question which went wrong from my latest exam,
31/41 - Correct; 10/41 - Wrong.

5 questions from RC - wrong
1 question from CR - Wrong
4 questions from SC - Wrong
Scored a 33.

Breakup of question which went wrong from another GMAT Prep exam,

27/41 - Correct; 14/41 - Incorrect.

5 questions from RC - Incorrect.
4 questions from CR - Incorrect.
5 questions from SC - Incorrect.
Scored 32.

Please advice.
Regards,

Pranay

It looks like your basics need some work....You have excellent resources....just study/review basics and allow yourself time to absorb...Also i do this that i write on a piece of paper whatever i have learned everyday ...just try it might be helpful .
Don't look for the incorrect things that you have done rather look for remedies....

Bubbli,

Your score demonstrates that you understand most of the key concepts that are tested. The strategy that I would advise for you is a divide and rule strategy. In short, focus on one of the 3, SC/CR/RC and try to improve on these while keeping your performance consistent on the remaining 2 sections.

How can you do it?
The most important things is to understand your weakness and ensure that you dont repeat the same mistakes. You have data from 2 tests. Look at 1 section (say SC) and revise all the questions that you did incorrectly. Revise critically by posing the following questions:
  • Did you spend enough time to understand the meaning
Did you spend enough time to analyze the original sentence and deduce possible errors.
Do you understand the mistake that you made. Have you taken steps to ensure that you dont repeat the mistake.
Try solving the question again. This time consciously apply the process and perform all process steps. Arrive at the correct answer yourself.
If you are not able to solve the question, then post it on the forums with your analysis and doubts.
After you receive the response, make notes. Again, ensure that you do not make the same mistake again.

Refer other material if you find that you are particularly week in a couple of topics to strengthen your skills in these areas.

Before your next mock

Revise SC/CR/RC 2 days prior to your next mock. This would ensure that your scores in the other 2 sections (the ones that you have not focused on) are maintained. Solve all the questions that you did incorrectly in the previous mocks (all mocks, not just GMATPrep).

Your should see improvement in the section that you have focused on. Once you see the desired improvement, move to the next section and repeat the process.

We also provide a free session that gives some other pointers. You can view the recording of the sessions here.

Note, this recording is 90 mins long.

Thanks for suggesting the strategy.

Can you also suggest me what other mock tests are preferred besides GMAT Prep. As of now I have only GMAT Prep with me and have tried an MGMAT diagnosis test.

Pranay,

I would recommend the MGMAT tests. They provide good analysis and the verbal portion is quite representative of GMATPrep (not as good but as close as it gets).

there aren't really any specific data or problem areas in the original post -- the original post just lists the numbers of problems incorrect in very broad topic areas -- so i can only offer general advice. most of the advice i have to offer about these topics is contained in the following post:

note in particular the warnings against studying too much, both overall and for cr/rc.
