I guess C is the right answer

B & D can be eliminated as it uses the pronoun "he"
between A,C & E, C uses the correct pronoun "me" at the end.

Mani

IMO C

"them" is in objective case.

Note that objective case of pronouns is used.

Objective case are me,Him/Her,Them,us,whom.

So "him" and "me" must be used.

selango :

No one (but <X>) could have told them that the king was I.

I think that X should be parallel to No one i.e it should be the subject for the sentence not the object.
So 'he' should be correct not him.

IMO this question tests the pronoun case: Subjective/Objective/Possesive

No one but him could have told them that the king was I.

1. him-> Acting as the subject so should have subjective pronoun 'He'
2. king was I-> 'was' is an intransitive linking verb with I as object; hence, objective pronoun "me" should have been used

Option 'B' -he could have told them that the king was me- seems to be the right answer to me.

looking forward to the official answer.

well guys.. OA is option A.

except, no one but.... take objective form of pronouns after them.. (him here)
linking verb takes subjective form of pronouns after it.. (I here)

good question .
I was sure about "I" by using flipping .
"the king was me" -> me was the king (wrong)
"the king was i" - > i was the king (correct)
Although was not aware of usage of objective pronoun
with
NO ONE BUT ...

TAKEAWAY for me :

NO ONE BUT .... takes objective pronoun :)
i never have a "TO -DO" list and i end up having a lot of "NOW WAT TO DO ?" lists

Yes I also thought the same.I was the king.

But selected the option C to maintain parallelism[Objective pronoun].Still its not correct.

Here are some notes about Objective case of pronouns

1.Objective form of pronouns are used after prepositions.

2.Objective form of pronouns are usually used after verbs.

Exception to rule2:the exception to this rule is verb "be"
