by KICKGMATASS123 » Tue May 19, 2009 7:24 pm
40, 45, 45, 50, 50, 60, 70, 75, 95, 100

The scores on a certain history test are shown above. how many scores were greater than the median score but less than the mean score?

A. None
B. One
C. Two
D. Three
E. Four

OA is B.

Median = 55. There are 5 numbers greater than the median
Mean = 63. There are 6 numbers less than mean score..

Is this the right approach???

YES, BUT TAKE IT ONE STEP FURTHER .

How many scores were greater than 55(median score) and less than 63(mean score)?

Only one score satisfies this condition which is 60.

yes, this is a big deal. if you have "greater than this AND less than that", then there's no reason to consider these conditions separately. in other words, you can just rephrase "greater than this AND less than that" to "between this and that".

As we can calculate that the Median is equal to 55 and Mean is equal to 63, so there is only one value that is greater than Median and less than Mean value.

So, answer is B (one)
