I'm very pleased to share another installment of the Beat The GMAT Exit Interviews Series. Today I am featuring an interview that I had with Jennifer Hu (recorded in April). Jen, also known as drabblejhu, has made quite a name for herself in our community for her awesome post about how you can improve your GMAT math score: If An English Teacher Can Raise Her Quant Score 34 to 48...

Jen is a non-traditional candidate who will be attending University of Michigan's Ross School of Business this Fall. She is also a successful re-applicant.

Here are some notes from Part 1/3 of this exit interview:

(1:27) Who are you?

  • Passionate about new ideas & making an impact. I love to build programs, relationships, community that enrich peoples lives and empower groups. Im fascinated by innovative, cross- sector solutions for education.
  • I am currently the service learning director of a K-12 school, a 9-12 diversity director, and I sit on the boards of two Bay Area nonprofits.

(2:18) Why do you want an MBA?

  • Help me transition from teaching to managerial roles within school/outside organization
  • Enjoyed working on strategy and operations improvement, leading colleagues, and felt MBA would give foundation/training/career opportunities/personal network to get better in these kind of roles.

(3:53) What attracted you to Ross?

  • At first, education dual degree (rare option at top B-schools)
  • Strong interest in social sector (Net Impact is award-winning and highly active) and know I will be able to build network of like-minded peers.
  • Great alumni network across the world
  • Visited the school for a womens weekend, fell in love with school

    • Experiential learning opportunities/academic strengths
    • New, amazing LEED certified building (important in Michigan winters!)
    • Sense of community/school spirit
    • Great Career Office Director.
