MBA in Energy & power sector

Hi everyone. Can anybody tell me the university that offers MBA program in Energy management or Power sector. I have heard about McCombs in USA (Univ. of Texas) & the one in Canada, university of Alberta. Can anybody guide me with the university & the cost of the program.I am graduate in Mechanical Engineering.
Currently I am working as a Design Executive in Engineering department in IJT, India. and i have a total experience of around 42 months in power sector.

Hi sandeepkhokhar--

Probably the best-known MBA programs with specializations or focus areas in energy (specifically oil and gas) are UT-Austin McCombs, as you already heard of, as well as Duke, in North Carolina. UC-Berkeley Haas is known for cleantech/alternative energy, as is Michigan Ross. These are the best-ranked programs with strengths in these areas. Many other top-ranked programs also have a smattering of offerings and most have an Energy Club, though not all of them will have quite as many resources or on-campus support in this area.

Other programs like Rice in Houston are also very strong, though this isn't a school at the top of the list. It's still a very good school though! If you would be interested in staying in Texas after you graduate, then a school like that could be ideal (lots of local recruiting opportunities and a good reputation within the energy industry). So, it depends on your profile, in terms of what type of school you're targeting, as well as where you see yourself ending up after you graduate.

What better than Stanford. The school has started its energy institute with a $100 m corpus. It has the highest no of energy firms coming for placements

Hi,

Request a profile evaluation from all you very cool people.

-28 years old
-B.Tech, Chemical Engineering from NIT Jaipur. GPA 6.76/10. [2.7/4]
-Integrated Course on Global Change and Sustainability from United Nations University, Tokyo
-Working in Fortune 500 Public Sector firm in Oil and Gas Industry
-Work Experience: 5 years as territory in charge, B2B Marketing.
-International level quizzer
-Sports and Extracurricular activities decent.
-Have done very impactful three Social service initiatives in my city but have no paperwork to prove it. First involved starting an initiative to teach tribal kids with the help of local college groups. Organized Blood Banks in collaboration with railways. Food for daily wage workers in co-operation with a local NGO.

I look forward to do a program which specializes in one of the following fields
-Energy/Renewable Energy/Oil and Gas
-Sustainability

I have given GMAT once but I score a dismal 620. I will be taking it again in August. An advice on what range should I look for given my profile would be much appreciated.

I request my profile evaluation for ISB, Wharton, HBS, NUS.

Also it would be great if some programs can be recommended to me given my profile and preferences.

I plan to leave my job and join some NGO/Social Initiative to improve my profile. I would request an opinion on that since quitting this rather high paying job will be a major decision for me.

Hey Kunal - well you have some interesting elements but your profile is also very standard in many ways, and that 620 GMAT is, as you know, quite low. Glad to hear you're planning on retesting. We strongly encourage you to move your test date up though. You don't want to be writing essays and studying for the GMAT at the same time, and a Round 1 app will be important for you, given your demographic.

The other issue though is your GPA - if it's really equivalent to a 2.7 on the 4.0 scale then you're going to have a difficult time getting into a top school. This can be a dealbreaker, unfortunately, it's very tough to overcome.

We also would caution you against taking a job in a nonprofit just to boost your profile for your apps. That's not a strategy that often pays off unless everything lines up just so. In most cases we would say to stick with the current career but we obviously don't know the full story.

Sorry to be so negative about those issues! But they are real concerns and you'll need to work to mitigate them. There's lots of great MBA programs out there of course, and if you're flexible with your targets then your odds increase.
