MBA Chance Evaluation

by SC_2015 » Sat Mar 07, 2015 5:01 pm
Hi,

I am planning on applying to some MBA programs and was hoping to get a sense of my chances. I really appreciate any help or advice you might have for me!

25 year old Indian - American Male
Undergraduate: University of Southern California Cum Laude (GPA 3.55)
B.S in Business Administration with a Minor in Political Science
GMAT: 710 Q49 V38

Work Experience:
Two years at a boutique technology investment bank (50-100 employees) as a M&A analyst working on deals in the $50 Million to $1 Billion range. The firm is well known in SF but is not an elite boutique.
Left the bank after the analyst program ended to join a large tech company (Amazon/Ebay/PayPal) in a Corporate Development role. I am finishing up my second year now.

Extracurricular:
-President of two clubs in college (founder of one)
-Extensive volunteer Experience:
-400+ Volunteer Hours during college
-Spent 5 Months after graduation volunteering and working for a Los Angeles-based non-profit working to help homeless people find employment
-Served as a urban youth mentor every year since graduating
-Adviser to a non-profit focused on helping employ the homeless.

Schools I hope to Attend:
Duke Fuqua
Dartmouth Tuck
Yale SOM
Chicago Booth
UVA Darden
UCLA Anderson

I am worried about my GMAT and GPA being slightly under the range for schools like Tuck and Booth. Additionally, I am concerned that I performed poorly in several quantitative undergraduate courses (Bs). Do I have a solid shot at any of these schools (particularly Fuqua and Tuck?). Would you recommend that I retake the GMAT for a score that is 720+? I really appreciate any insight!

Hey there,
Thanks for writing dude!

So overall I think you have quite an excellent profile. Both jobs are excellent and the combination is, I find quite unique. Your extra curriculars and volunteer work seems exceptional from here, and your GPA is excellent.

I think that with that profile and your current GMAT you can apply to the schools on your list. Would it be better if you had a higher GMAT? Sure, why not? But whether you should retake it would depend on how much higher you could get and how much effort it would take.

Otherwise, things look good. Just make an amazing application, and give it your best!
