MBA Admissions Question (I'm still in undergrad)

I'm only in my last year of college, but I'm pretty sure I want to get an MBA. I know I need work experience before an MBA program. I'm a black male and will graduate with a BA in Economics from UVA with a 3.25 GPA. My major GPA is around a 3.0 as well. I had a huge upward trend in my GPA, with a 2.5 gpa my first year of school. I have good grades in my Quantitative classes: Financial Accounting (A) Behavorial Finance (A) Managerial Accounting (B) etc..

So far, I've had internship with Capital One, Pepsi, and a government organization for 4 years.

I've gotten around a 680 GMAT on my practice tests.

What do I need to do to get into a top MBA program?

Thanks

Dear jaw5xs,

Keep doing what you are doing. Finish your undergraduate degree strong and start working. Regardless of where you work, you want it to be a professional opportunity where you can maximize your potential. Seek out opportunities to broaden and deepen your skills and knowledge. Show initiative, take on leadership opportunities, and have demonstrated progression on your resume by the time you apply to business school 2-4 years later. Progression does not have to be a title change; it just has to be tangible evidence that you were given more responsibility (managing more people, larger budgets or larger projects). Outside of work, you want to also be involved in a community organization(s) or other activity. These are opportunities where you can gain leadership skills that you might not have a chance to gain in the professional arena, so seek out high involvement in what you do outside of work. Take the GMAT and do well; maybe even take it a second or third time to get your score where you want it to be. If you score at a 680+, then you are pretty competitive for most programs, but anything in the 700s is ideal. Finally, don't forget to document and track all that you are doing along the way so it is easy to complete those applications later.

Good luck,
Lisa
