Hi Stacy,

I have been working in the Financial Services field for 3 years now, and am thinking of applying to MBA programs for Fall 2010. My undergrad GPA is 2.85, and that will be the biggest weakness in my application. I have a 700 on my GMAT, and can get excellent recommendations. Do you think I have a chance of getting into a decent school? I am looking at BU, BC, Georgetown for example. Any input from you would really help!

I think you have a shot at your target schools. While your GPA is on the low side, your GMAT is above average for those schools. Your essays, recommendations and interviews will play a significant role, so do your part to ensure the remaining components of your application are a strong representation of your candidacy.

Thank you Stacy. That was helpful and encouraging. I have also been reading up on something called the alternative transcript. Do you think doing that would put me in a better spot? And could that help me if I wanted to apply to better schools? If I do decide to build this, what kind of classes and how many classes would you recommend taking? What kind of a school can I take them from (eg. State school or private univ.)?

An alternative transcript might be helpful in your case. However, you will still need a good GMAT score. Most people take 2-3 classes, either math courses and/or accounting, finance or statistics courses. You can take them at any community college or university where you will earn a grade for the class.
