Maybe some insight..? Non-Trad construction background

Been getting advice from a lot of people who really don't know what they are talking about...figure maybe I can get some insight here...

-I'm 28 and graduated from kansas univ with a masters in architecture
-730/6.0 gmat
-3.36 gpa/masters in architecture at univ of kansas(good architecture school)
-Spent a year working in an architecture office, part of team that received some green building accolades. LEED certified professional.
-Hit hard by recession in '09 and regrouped with goal of starting my own complete business
-Did construction in the field.
-Been project manager for last year supervising renovations of large apartment complexes.
-Have experience and in process of obtaining license as a Architect, General Contractor and Real-Estate broker and with an MBA from xxxx I will be in position to combine these skills and offer a unique comprehensive service

That's the jist of my background/goals. I want to attend a top 10 type school and was wondering if anyone out there thought there would be schools that might be better suited for me? Or people's opinion on someone with as non-traditional of a background as I do.

Hi,

Thanks for your post. You certainly do have a non-traditional background, but I think most adcoms will find your mix of experience attractive. My main concern is regarding your goals, it's not quite clear to me exactly how obtaining an MBA will help you. What are your post MBA goals? Often times those with non-traditional backgrounds struggle to explain their rationale for an MBA and in particular fail to fully articulate the necessity of the degree. Be sure your goals are clear and that that adcom doesn't think it possible for you to obtain them without your MBA.

As for schools, I would suggest looking at Tuck, Ross and Chicago Booth. These schools are known for their fondness of non-traditional candidates. Just remember, you already stand out in the applicant pool, so be sure to demonstrate just how you'll fit in.

Regards,

Stacey
