Only when a product is demanded by sufficiently large numbers of people is mass production feasible.
(A) sufficiently large numbers of people is mass production
(B) a sufficient amount of people would mass production become
(C) sufficient people would mass production become
(D) a sufficient amount of people is mass production
(E) sufficient amounts of people is mass production

OA after some discussion. Please explain your pick.

usage of amount with people is wrong for sure.
But am b/w A & C :(
C uses would , i might have opted for it if it is will instead.also sufficient people looks awkward.
I might go for A

IMO A

As B,D & E wrongly uses amount with people. And as far as C goes, sufficient people sounds awkward.

In B, D and E, amount cannot be used to refer to people, which is a countable noun. Eliminate B, D and E.

In C, sufficient people does not convey the intended meaning. The PEOPLE themselves are not sufficient; their NUMBERS are sufficient. Also, would (subjunctive) does not agree with is demanded (present). Eliminate C.

The correct answer is A.

In A, numbers = MULTITUDES. The meaning here is that sufficiently large NUMBERS/MULTITUDES -- 4 million people in the US, 5 million people in China, etc. -- are demanding the product. There is precedent for this sort of usage; consider the following SC from the OG10:
