In July 1965 Mariner IV passed by Mars and took the first-ever close-up photographs of another planet, which showed that the Martian surface was like that of the Moon's in that it was pockmarked by moonlike craters and was dry and apparently dead.

a.
b. which showed a dry, apparently dead Martian surface, and it was pockmarked by craters like the Moon has
c. which showed the Martian surface as a dry, apparently dead one, which was pockmarked with craters such as the Moon's

A/B/C are simply wrong.

From the question, we are not sure whether the surface of moon is also dry and apparently dead.

photos or photo should come right after the comma since the first part is a modifier so btw D and E

E is precise and perfect

If you get the meaning of the sentence this sentence, you can find out that E is the correct option.

It is the photos that showed a dry, apparently dead Martian surface.

OA is E. But it seems strange to me that the first part is a complete full sentence, and the second part, isn't modifying photos, so much as it is saying photos that blah blah blah, seems grammatically incorrect or a run-on of some sort.
