Maria wants to send a package overseas. She can either pay shipping company \(A\) an amount dependent on the distance of the delivery or pay shipping company \(B\) an amount dependent on the weight of the package. Which option is less expensive?

1. Company \(A\) charges $3.00 plus $0.01 per mile of shipment, and company \(B\) charges $5.00 plus $8.50 per pound.
2. The person who will receive the packages lives 3,900 miles away from Maria.

Company A - price is based on distance
Company B - price is based on weight
Find the cheaper option between company A and B
Let shipping distance = X
Let weight of package = Y

Statement 1 => company A charges $3.00 plus $0.01 per mile of shipment and company B charges $5.00 plus $8.50 per pound
A = 3 + 0.01 X
B = 5 + 8.5 Y
value of X and Y is not known. Hence, statement 1 is NOT SUFFICIENT

Statement 2 => The person who will receive the package lives 3900 miles away from Maria
X = 3900 miles, there is no information about Y or the charges of the company.
Statement 2 is NOT SUFFICIENT
Combining both statement together
A = 3 + ( 0.01 ) ( 3900 )
B = 5 + 8.5 Y
value of Y is not known. Hence, both statement together are NOT SUFFICIENT
Answer = option E
