The four-million-year-old fossilized skeleton known as Lucy is so small compared with many other skeletons presumed to be of the same species, and so some paleontologists have argued that Lucy represents a different lineage.

A. presumed to be of the same species, and so
B. presumed to be of the same species that
C. presumed that they are of the same species, and so
D. that they have presumed to be of the same species, so that
E. that they have presumed are of the same species, and

Any thoughts!!......I will post the OA as the post gets flooded with responses and some explanations....

[A] - "..is so small.." can't be followed by "and" - the connection is lost
Correct in my opinion, since a "that" follows
[C] "and, so" is wrong. Plus "presumed that they..." seems to refer that skeletons presumed something
[D] Changes meaning, since it says that Lucy is the same species
[E] Same as D

Firstly , the options can be narrowed down by location the proper usage of the idiom - so...that...So , A ruled out
C, D and E are also ruled out because "they' does not have an antecedent
B is concise and correct . also correct usage of so..that

IDIOM Test: So X that.. Here X= "small compared with many other skeletons presumed to be of the same species"

A. presumed to be of the same species, and so :INCORRECT --> that required
B. presumed to be of the same species that :Correct IDIOM is 'So X that'
C. presumed that they are of the same species, and so :INCORRECT: added so again at the end.
D. that they have presumed to be of the same species, so that :INCORRECT: This has correct IDIOM "So X So Y That" but logically doesn't sound its testing that meaning.
E. that they have presumed are of the same species, and :Same as A

Yes, the underline isn't quite right in the original; it should look as reply2spg showed up above.

Note: I'll respond to this one because the verbal sets aren't officially banned here at BTG, but I will say that I'm not a fan of this source and wouldn't use it to study myself. Many of the questions are fine, but there are also a number of bad questions, errors, and so on in these sets. Free stuff downloaded anonymously over the Internet: you get what you pay for. :)

There's an idiom in there (not correctly completed in the original sentence): "Lucy is SO X... THAT <Y is true or Y is the case as a result>. There's no "THAT Y" in the original sentence. Eliminate A. Note the basic meaning of the nonunderlined part: Lucy is SO SMALL compared with many other skeletons... (THAT). Whatever follows "that" will have to provide the reason why we're emphasizing how small Lucy is.

Examine the other choices:
B) SO small (compared to skeletons supposedly of same species) THAT some people argue Lucy is different. Okay.
C) SO small (compared with many other skeletons presumed) THAT they are of the same species. That doesn't make sense. The Y is not true as a result of being "so small."
D) SO small (compared with many other skeletons) THAT they have presumed to be of the same species. That doesn't make sense (same reason as C). Also, this says that "they," the skeletons, have presumed something. They're skeletons; they can't presume anything. :)
E) SO small (compared with many other skeletons) THAT they have presumed are of the same species. The idiom still doesn't work.

Only B works!
