How do the airlines expect to prevent commercial plane crashes? Studies have shown that pilot error contributes to two-thirds of all such crashes. To address this problem, the airlines have upgraded their training programs by increasing the hours of classroom instruction and emphasizing communication skills in the cockpit. But it is unrealistic to expect such measures to compensate for pilots"Ÿ lack of actual flying time. Therefore, the airlines should rethink their training approach to reducing commercial crashes.
Which one of the following is an assumption upon which the argument depends?
(A) Training programs can eliminate pilot errors.
(B) Commercial pilots routinely undergo additional training throughout their careers.
(C) The number of airline crashes will decrease if pilot training programs focus on increasing actual flying time.
(D) Lack of actual flying time is an important contributor to pilot error in commercial plane crashes.
(E) Communication skills are not important to pilot training programs.

IMO the pilots"Ÿ lack of actual flying time is so imp that the argument suggests to rethink the training approach. But yeah its also true its not the only important one as indicated by the argument. Furthermore, the training pprogram has also been upgraded to reduce pilot error and henceforth the crashes.
Hence the assumption D goes fyn with the argument.
Also by negation test it seems correct
i.e.
negated option D implies --> conclusion is weakened.

F1: 2/3 of crashes are attributed to pilot errors.
F2: (Increase hours of classroom instructions + comm. skills) to reduce pilot errors
P1: (Increase hours of classroom instructions + comm. skills) will not compensate for Actual flying time.

Conclusion : Need to rethink the training approach.

Here we need to connect two variable ( Actual flying time TO pilot errors )


Which one of the following is an assumption upon which the argument depends?

- May be, but it doesn't tell connect the two variable I am looking for.
(C) The number of airline crashes will decrease if pilot training programs focus on increasing actual flying time.
- First of all it use a very blunt language - "will decrease", Second it connect actual flying time to number of airline crashes. However it should be : Actual FT --> pilot errors --> plane crashes.
We are not sure whether pilot crashes --> plane crashes. Still C is a choice.

(D) Lack of actual flying time is an important contributor to pilot error in commercial plane crashes.
This is exactly what I predict. Also it has a mild language which normally a characteristics of assumption questions.
