Low GPA - Any chance for Wharton?

Long story short,

Went to a city university, worked full time as well as went to school full time (family issues).

Graduated in 2010 with a borderline 3.0 in finance.

Currently working in banking as a credit analyst.

Been getting 700+ on practice gmat exams.

Any chance for me to get into Wharton?

Appreciate the feedback.

There's not enough info here yet for me or anyone really to answer. We need to know a lot more about you. Including WHAT you do at work, what your position is, how many people you lead, how many promotions you have received, how old you are, what nationality you are, what gender, etc. etc. as all these things will play a role in evaluating your chances.

I agree that we would need more info to give you a fair estimation of your chances, but with regards to your GPA, that alone would not exclude you from Wharton. Certainly a positive trend at the end of school will help, as will an explanation of your full time work and family issues.

That said, 3.0 certainly puts you well below their gpa average, so you would need to show something else quite special in my opinion, like an above average gmat, or...

Candidates with 3.0GPA and below have been accepted to Wharton, but they often brought other - offsetting - qualities to the table such as incredible leadership experience, solid GMAT scores, and focused career goals.

Bear that in mind as you take the next step!

I don't think it's that bad if you can explain the low GPA, and it seems like you have a good story behind it. Just aim for a high GMAT to compensate for it. I would try Wharton anyway, and perhaps add some safety schools.

Your full-time work during college is one of the few strong explanations for a low-ish GPA, and a 700 GMAT score is solid if it's balanced (in the neighborhood of the 80th percentile in Math and Quant). If the rest of your application is strong, e.g., you have good leadership, etc. then you would have a decent chance at Wharton. Feel free to send me your resume for a closer look: [email protected].
