I took the GMAT without giving myself time for proper preparation (I only had a week to study). I did much more poorly than I had expected, had trouble finishing the quantitative section, and guessed on the last 8 questions due to time constraints. I did just the opposite on the verbal section; I worked too quickly and carelessly, and finished with about 10 minutes left. I got a 580 Unofficial score, 39 Quantitative and 31 Verbal.
My main question is: can a GMAT score be drastically improved? I would prefer to apply to top tier schools, and I know this score will certainly not suffice. I am also not sure that I am an otherwise ideal candidate, even if I were to raise my GMAT, so whether or not GMAT scores tend to improve upon retesting will greatly affect my decision of whether or not to apply.
Other background information about me:
Psychology major
Minor in Marketing
Minor in Economics
I go to Indiana University. 3.4 cumulative GPA, with 3.86 average GPA in last 3 semesters (sharp upward trend). 4.0 GPA in courses in the Kelly School of Business.
Do I have a shot at improving my score if I were to devote more time and take a more organized approach?
