(B) The endurance and consistency of Lou Gehrig, a baseball star known as "The Iron Horse," is legendary.
(C) Known as "The Iron Horse," the endurance and consistency of Lou Gehrig, the baseball star, is legendary.
(D) The reason baseball star Lou Gehrig is known as "The Iron Horse" is because of his legendary endurance and consistency.
(E) Known as "The Iron Horse," baseball star Lou Gehrig's endurance and consistency are legendary.

B,C,D out incorrect sub verb agreement.

E -misplaced modifier

A correct compound sub(endurance and consistency)always require plural verb..in this case are
It does not matter how many times you get knocked down , but how many times you get up

I agree that A suits the best but doesn't "The Iron Horse" looks like it is referring to "the endurance and consistency" instead of Lou Gehrig? "baseball star Lou Gehrig" is anyways in a prepositional phrase.

I don't get it. Why can't it be "E"?

Doesn't the "Iron Man" describe the baseball player? Why would the baseball players definition be a misplaced modifier?

Can someone please explain?

Because a modifier will modify the noun or the subject. Here the "baseball star" is the adjective to Lou Gehrig. But in E, the sentence nowhere has Lou Gehrig but it has Lou Gehrig's (Possessive form). So, in this option it is essentially saying that "Lou Gehrig's endurance and consistency" is known as the "Iron Horse". Which as you see is wrong.

Also D changes the meaning of the sentence.

known as 'The Iron Horse' is a modifier. D talks as though only bcos of his consistence and endurance he's called Iron horse.

But actually the sentence says, Endurance and consistency of Lou Gehrig are legendary. Hence A is right.
All other mismatches have been mentioned.

B Need a plural from the 'to be' for endurance and consistency
C Lou Gehrig is known as the Iron Horse, not his endurance
D Wordy and in improper order. No need for the word because.
E Lou Gehrig is known as the Iron Horse, not his endurance
