Like the grassy fields and old pastures that the upland sandpiper needs for feeding and nesting when it returns in May after wintering in the Argentine Pampas, the sandpipers vanishing in the northeastern United States is a result of residential and industrial development and of changes in farming practices.

OA: B?

Like the land is vanishing, the bird is vanishing.
A. sounded close but awkward due to the usage: the sandpipers vanishing
C. the phrase begins with that and ends awkwardly.
D. in the NE US states modifies Argentine Pampas.
E. Same as D and Grammatically horrible. :)

Answer is B.

grassy fields and sandpipers are vanishing for the same reason.

[It was a typo error. Of course answer is B]

i find one more problem in A i.e the usage of "is a result of", though in B an idiom "as a result of" is being properly used in the sentence................please correct me if i am wrong........

You could say the sandpipers' vanishing is a result of, but note that then vanishing is a noun and you need sandpipers to be possessive.
