Leadership vs. Area of Concentration

by career_switcher » Thu Feb 15, 2007 6:56 pm
Hi Stacy,

I was wondering which would be looked as more favorable work experience:

a managerial/supervisory position at current industry (which I will not be pursuing further)

OR

an analyst position at industry of choice post MBA

Thank you.

Both of these positions can serve you well - it really depends on the overall message you are putting together.

The managerial role will help you to show career progression and leadership, both of which will be important.

The analyst role will show that you are already taking steps to move towards your goals, whch is also an important message that you want to convey to the adcomm. Even if this is an entry level role, you will want to show that you are taking initiative and exerting yourself as a leader - even if it is in an untraditional way.
