I was having problems in answering the following question.
Leaching, the recovery of copper from the drainage water of mines, as a method of
the extraction of minerals, it was well established as early as the eighteenth century,
but until about 25 years ago miners did not realize that bacteria take an active part in
the process.

Leaching <modifier> was a well-established method - Eliminate A,B and E (no need of perfect tense IMO)
In D you already mention 'method', so that would be referring it twice.
Only C is left.

I think C was correct option
D. was a well-established method of extracting mineral that was

OA is option C. But since this was 25 years ago can't we use past prefect tense? I thought did not realize is past tense. Can somebody please explain?
Can someone explain why use of past perfect tense is wrong in option E in this question?
