Challenging the hypothesis that tuberculosis could only be transmitted when someone inhaled air that had been exhaled by an infected individual, an article published in Nature magazine in 1872 reported that when examined, monkeys that had been kept in confinement and had consequently never breathed contaminated air still displayed tubercles in their lungs and presented with the same symptoms that individuals infected with tuberculosis did, and that they did not always transmit the disease upon coming in contact with an uninfected monkey.


A) and had consequently never breathed contaminated air still displayed tubercles in their lungs and presented with the same symptoms that individuals infected with tuberculosis did, and that

B) consequently never breathed contaminated air, still displaying tubercles in their lungs and presenting with the same symptoms as individuals who had been infected with tuberculosis did, and that

IMO: A, this answer shows correct parallelism ( reported that..... that ....), moreover, it uses right past perfect tense with ( had been kept and had breath ) which shows that action of being kept and breath occur before reported.

B, wrong because it creates an fragment sentence ( still displaying....) because a clause should follow ofter that.

C, the change of the word consequently changes the intended meaning of the sentence. and without that after AND, the sentence lost parallelism

D, the use of but still cause redundancy. moreover the addition of they cause trouble for the sentence because monkeys already play a role of subject.

E, the change of consequently changes the intended meaning of the sentence. Moreover without that after AND, parallelism of the sentence lost.

So, I believe the correct answer is A.

Here are my 2 cents .

The sentence checks two things parallelism and comparison . As previous post have rightly pointed out the use of THAT ... THAT . I will try to focus on comparison issue .

Challenging the hypothesis that tuberculosis could only be transmitted when someone inhaled air that had been exhaled by an infected individual, an article published in Nature magazine in 1872 reported that when examined, monkeys that had been kept in confinement and had consequently never breathed contaminated air still displayed tubercles in their lungs and presented with the same symptoms that individuals infected with tuberculosis did, and that they did not always transmit the disease upon coming in contact with an uninfected monkey.

We need to compare the symptoms that monkeys displayed with the symptoms that were displayed by monkeys infected with TB did .

Only two option do this A and B .

Lets look at B.

consequently never breathed contaminated air, still displaying tubercles in their lungs and presenting with the same symptoms as individuals who had been infected with tuberculosis did, and that

The sentence starts with past Perfect monkeys that had been kept ---- 1 st action .

So the second action displayed ---- needs to be in past also .
"Know thyself" and "Nothing in excess"

A remains.
