Identify an assumption on which the following argument depends:

A social psychologist claims that the physical proximity between people is the main predictor of interpersonal attraction. To support this, the psychologist claims that in a college dorm, students who live on the same floor tend to become friends with one another more often than with those who live on other floors.

The students in the dorm do not necessarily have floor meetings that lead to higher interpersonal attraction.

The students in the dorm may also have close friends who live in other dorms.

The students in the dorm are an accurate representation of the general population.

The students in the dorm do not have different numbers of friends on the floor.

Confused between A and C .
I think floor meetings is a type of "physical proximity" mentioned in the passage.
So will go with C .

pradeepkaushal9518, your post has two questions.

From this text you can draw two assumtions.

1. Giving an example of college dorm, psychologist assumes that all people in the world look like students in the dorm, which means the students in the dorm are an accurate representation of the general population.

2. Second assumption is "living on the same floor means physical proximity".

But, thank god that we don't have answer with the meaning of assumption #2

So, answer must be C.

I will go with C. Negate C and the whole argument falls-ie the example given would not hold good if C is negated!

I believe its A.... If we negate A Conclusion weekens..we get that the dorm meeting is bring people together rather than physical proximity. Hence this is assumption

C-> Even if it is not an accurate representation of people, what does that mean and how much it can affect the people is not clear. We can't make decision upright on it...

The author is giving an example of a dorm assuming that this holds true universally. Hence, the assumption is that dorm represents the whole population.
