A for me. C is changing the intent in my opinion. A means that an authority(which is no less than William) has reported.......

Please let us know the OA of this teaser :-)

I don't know that the new GMAT would test you this way, but "nonetheless" does not mean the same thing as "not less", and "authoritarian" does not mean the same thing as "authority."

E seems to be changing the intent of the sentence. A seems to be taking proud that an authority which can not be said to be less than a great authoritarian Walter Cronkite has reported some thing. E just says that an authority which is equal to that of Walter has reported something. The meaning of both the sentences is different. I hope I was able to convey my reason :-)
