The correct answer here is A. However, I'm quite sure that we need past perfect here. Can anyone help?

Its very tempting!! BUT the use of word BEFORE ensures that you go with simple past.
Remember we should use past perfect only when we need to take care of the sequence of events, but here its already been taken care by using the word BEFORE.
