verb-ing modifiers

by bblast » Mon Aug 08, 2011 3:43 am
Lillian Moller Gilbreth patented many kitchen appliances, including an electric food mixer and shelves inside refrigerator doors.

As per rule the "ing" modifier modifies the entire clause before the comma- when it follows a comma. Here including is modifying entire clause before comma and hence should be incorrect. The intent of the "including" here is to modify kitchen appliances.

Similar sentence :

Lillian Moller Gilbreth patented many kitchen appliances, breaking all previous patenting records.

here breaking modifies the entire act of the patenting process. So this should be correct

Expert takes on my perspectives above please.
Cheers !!

Hi,
You can call it 'Curious case of comma+ing modifier' :)
comma+including is different from other comma+ing modifiers.
Takeaway: 'comma + including' can stand for the preceding NOUN -- or the preceding NOUN + MODIFIERS, if there are modifiers attached to the noun.

Well, you can go through expert posts on the following thread :

It could be argued that including, like any other present participle preceded by a comma, refers to the subject of the preceding clause. In the sentence above, including refers to Lillian Moller Gilbreth: she was including -- among the kitchen appliances that she patented -- an electric food mixer and shelves inside refrigerator doors.
