in a certain school 50 percent of all male students and 60 percent of all female students play a varsity sports . if 40 percent of the students at the school are male what percent of the entire student body do not play a varsity sport?

Let the total number of students at school = x
Number of male students = 40% of x = 0.4x
Number of female students = x - 0.4x = 0.6x
Number of male students who play a varsity sports = 50% of 0.4x = 0.2x
Number of female students who play a varsity sports = 60% of 0.6x = 0.36x
Number of male and female students who play a varsity sport = 0.2x + 0.36x = 0.56x
Therefore, number of male and female students who do not play a varsity sport = x - 0.56x = 0.44x, which is 44% of the total students.

The correct answer is (A).

total students 100 : males 40 , females 60

non-varsity males 20(half) and non-varsity females 2/5th(40%) of 60=24 . Hence, total non-varsity = 20 + 24 = 44%.

oh harsh its really short cut taking 100 for percentage problems are really helpful

let school = 100

males = 40, females = 60

1/2 of 40 men play = 20

60% of 60 women play = 36

Total not playing = 100 - (20+36) = 44

% = 44/100 = 44%
