kaplan picking numbers

I thought I was decent at picking number and forcing an answer out. Untill this question.

If snow falls at a rate of x cm per minute, how many hours would it take for y centimeters to fall?

a. x/60y
b.y/60x
c.60x/y
d.60y/x
e.60xy

qa is y/60x

I set up a proportion,

1 minute/X cm =M (minutes)/Y cm

m= y/x then simply convert from minute to hour

THIS IS THE TRICKY PART

I converted but came up wth 60x/y but answer is y/60x. what went wrong?
Appetite for 700 and I scraped my plate!

Enginpasa1, u were correct in ur approach but ... OK! Now look, u know that y/x min is required to fall y cm. now u need to convert this y/x min into hour.
For that, 60 min -> 1 hr
1 min -> 1/60 hr
y / x -> y/60x hr.

Now got it, enginpasa1 ...
Correct me If I am wrong

thank you.

I noticed that I am losing points less now a days to word problems. HOWEVER< if I do lose points its because of not applying simple logic and getting far too deep into a problem than is needed. In essence, I am making the problem harder than it really is.

my initial approach to this was picking numbers, which is ok but so much loinger than just stepping back and looking at the question for a second!
LEsson learned? Hope so!

x cm = 1 min = 1/60 hr

1 cm = 1/60x hr

Hence, y cm = y/60x hr

Think about it as you would a (d=r*t) problem.

(Amount of snow) = (Rate of snow fall) * (Time)


Amount of snow: y cm
Rate of snow fall: x cm / min which you calculated as 60x cm / hr
Time: t


y = 60x * t

t = y/60x
