If X and Y are nonzero intergers what is the remainder when X is divided by Y?

1. When X is divided by 2Y the remainder is 4

2. When X+ Y is divided by Y the remainder is 4


The answer is B

but I don't understand how it can be the answer . I picked E

Can somebody elaborate on this question. thanks

Statement II)

X+Y =Y(some integer)+4

X= Y(some integer) - Y +4

X = Y ( some integer - 1) + 4

X = Y ( new integer ) + 4 :wink:

So it is is suffucient.

What will you find when you try this method on Statement 1 ?

What I don't understand is if you plug in different numbers for statement 2 you do not get the same remainder with different numbers if you plug the numbers in the stem.

Example

x=4
y=6

4+6/6 has remainder 4
if you plug 4 and 6 into x/y you get 4/6

If you plug in

X=4
Y=7

4+7/7 has remainder 4
if you plug 4 and 7 into x/y you get 4/7

therefore, 4/6 and 4/7 don't have the same remainder so how is the answer to this question b?

okay X needs to be divided by Y in your both examples you choose X < Y

in other words

X = Yk + 4 and your K=0

Davy,
4/6 and 4/7 do have the same remainders which is 4.

6 goes in 4 0 times with a reminder of 4(quotient=0 reminder=4)
7 goes in 4 0 times with a remainder of 4(quotient=0 reminder=4)
