If k is an integer, is k evenly divisible by 3?

(1) 2 k is evenly divisible by 3.

(2) 3 k is evenly divisible by 3.

St 1:

Let 2k =18, ( K will be 9); 18 is evenly divisible by 3, where as 9 is not!!

So A is NOT sufficient!!

St 2

3k =18 ( K will be 6); 18 is evenly divisble by 3 and K is also evenly divisible.

We can try for few more values of even multiples of 3..( say 6,12,18,24...)

Insufficient

Combining also wont help much

IMO A

because if 2k is evenly divisible by 3 then k has to be a multiple of 3
but if 3k is evenly divisible by 3 k may or may not a multiple of 3

Note: I have assumed that 'evenly divisible' means dividing a group of objects into subgroups of even (that is, the same) size.
what is the OA?

(1) When k is an integer and 2 k is evenly divisible by 3, it's k that's indubitably divisible by 3.

(2) When k is an integer, it can be taken for granted that 3 k is evenly divisible by 3 for any integer k.

yes 36 is very much evenly divisble. But K =12 is evely divisible.
Here we get 2 CONTRADICTORY answers...( BOTH YES & A NO)

So I felt B is not sufficient alone!!


Same case of Insufficiency with A also.

So I picked E!!

1: 2K divisible by 3 it implies that K has to be divisible by 3...SUFF
2:3K divisible by 3..it implies K might or might be divisible by 3 example in 3X5...5 isnot divisibe by 3but in3X42 ...both 3 and 42 are divisiblble by 3 hence INSUFF

OA pls?

Qn stem states that k is an integer, is k evenly divisible by 3?

st1. 2k is divisible by 3...

if 2k = 6 which is 2x3, k =3, thus k is evenly divisible by 3.

if 2k =9, k =4.5, reject cos k is not an integer

going on we can see that for all values of k that is divisible by 3, k has a factor of 3 in it, thus always divisible by 3.

for e.g 2k =18, thus k =9 which is 3x3.

statement 1 is sufficient.

st 2. 3k is divisible by 3

if 3k = 30, k = 10, thus k is not evenly divisibly by 3.

but if 3k = 27, k = 9, thus k is evenly divisible by 3.

thus st 2 is insufficient...


ANS is A?

Is k = 2* 3* some integer ?

St1] 2 k is evenly divisible by 3.
This means that k is definitely divisible by 3.
Insuff.

St2] 3 k is evenly divisible by 3.
This means that k is definitely divisible by 2
Insuff
Together we know that k has atleast one 2 and one 3 as its factors.
Hence C.
