Jemma takes 2 hours to swim the 4 miles from buoy A to buoy B. Tired from her swim, she then continues to buoy C at half her previous speed. If buoy C is 6 miles away from buoy B, how many more hours will pass before Jemma reaches Buoy C?

The OA is C.

Please, can anyone explain this PS question? I can't get the correct answer. I need help. Thanks.

Hi swerve,

We're told that Jemma takes 2 hours to swim the 4 miles from buoy A to buoy B and then continues to buoy C at HALF her previous speed. If buoy C is 6 miles away from buoy B, we're asked how many MORE hours will pass before Jemma reaches Buoy C. This question is just a 'Rate' question - and you can solve it with some basic Arithmetic.

Since Jemma took 2 hours to swim the first 4 miles, she swam at 2 miles/hour. We're told that this rate is then cut in HALF for the next part of her swim - so she is then swimming at 1 mile/hour. Over the course of the next 6 miles at THAT speed, she would need 6 hours to swim that distance.

Final Answer: C

Jemma's initial speed, from A to B, is 2 mph. Her speed from B to C is 1 mph, so it takes her 6 hours to swim to buoy C.

Answer: C
