There are hopeful signs

by ska7945 » Tue Sep 30, 2008 9:17 pm
There are hopeful signs that we are shifting away from our heavy reliance on fossil fuels: more than ten times as much energy is generated through wind power now than it was in 1990.

(A) generated through wind power now than it was
(B) generated through wind power now as it was
(C) generated through wind power now as was the case
(D) now generated through wind power as it was
(E) now generated through wind power than was the case
let's beat GMAT.

This has pronoun referral issue. Any pronoun should refer to the full noun in its totality.. here the full noun is "more than ten times as much energy".. "it" cannot refer to this.. so we can safely eliminate A, B and D.
For example: last year's rainfall was much more than it is this year.. incorrect.. it cannot refer to "last year's rainfall"..

Here "now" is an adverb and should be placed immediately before generated.. so this leaves us with option E.

IMO A

We clearly require 'than' and not 'as'--> more wind power is generated now than it was in 1990

That leaves us with A and E. E seems wordy and awkward.

What is the OA?

I will go with "C".
As A,B, D has pronoun error "it" which seems to refer back to "generation of wind power" and as per definition "it" should only refer back to noun and not to a clause/phrase.
Problem with "E" is use of than.

I chose B and following is my take on this question

<original>more than ten times as much energy is generated through wind power now than it was in 1990. -than is used incorrectly in this sentence.

<my opinion>more than ten times as much energy is generated through wind power now as it was <generated> in 1990. The "it" clearly refers to energy rather than wind power. And the sentence appears parallel to me.

OA Plz!

I''m with (C)

Two reasons:

1) "as much as" is the correct idiom.

2) Pronoun "it" in other four options doesn't have a clear referent. Does it refer to energy or wind power ?
