Is x + y < 1?
(1) x < 8/9
(2) y < 1/8

Thought the answer was (C) since I tried picking numbers. However, I might have overlooked another possibility.

(1) alone is NOT sufficient.
(2) alone is NOT sufficient.

Combining (1) and (2), x + y < (8/9 + 1/8) implies x + y < 73/72 or x + y < (1 + 1/72), which implies x + y may or may not be less than 1.

The correct answer is E.
