Is third round too late? 2008 or 2009?

Hi Stacey and moderators of this forum,

I was aiming for a part time mba till now. But i am in a dilemma after getting a good gmat score (720, 5 AWA) and would now like to shoot for some top full time schools. Except, the only deadlines i know are for third round.

Would it be more reasonable to wait till next year and apply rather than apply this year in third round. I would like to aim for the top 10 schools. Do advise if you can give some advise based on the profile below:

Second question: I would have close to 7-8 years work ex by the time i apply next year. Would that put me at a disadvantage.

6 year work ex in an electronics multinational: mostly engineering levels
MS from US Good Engineering School GPA 4
B.Tech from one of the top colleges in India GPA 8/10
Gmat 720, AWA 5

Where i lack:
extra-curricular, i.e no charity etc
no managerial roles yet.

Hi Mbamba,

Third round will be difficult, though if you're willing to manage your expectations and re-apply next year if it doesn't work out, it may be worth the try.

It's great to have a good GMAT score, and your general academics seem strong. I would be concerned about finding leadership experiences to highlight in your application - with no extracurriculars or management experience you'll need to really think about how to show your leadership and management potential.

Can you advise on the other question i asked:

For the leadership/manager feedback, does it require extra curricular activities. Can this be compensated by progression in job and leadership demonstration in technical roles. I have not participated in charity/voluntary work since college and see this difficult considering that i have family. I know that is not an excuse but any feedback is welcome.

Hi mbamba,

I don't think 7-8 years of work experience is necessarily an issue, as long as you have continued to progress in your career.

Yes, you can certainly demonstrate your leadership and management potential through work. It is a disadvantage relative to your peers not to have any extracurricular experience, which you will need to consider. If you are applying third round this year, it's a moot point and you'll need to manage around that weakness. If you apply next year you have some time to start working on that area of your profile.
