Hi,
I'm Italian and I got a BA in Anthropology. After my graduation, Iobtaind a job at a company dealing in cleansing and logistic. It's a mid-size company, boasting 320 employees. I started as quality assurance vice-manager, and now (after 1,5 years) I'm the quality assurance manager.
I'd like to know: is this a good position, which provides me with leadership and teamwork exposure or not?
I have to coordinate with the manager of safety and with the board for a lot of things, and we often act in conjunction (I think this provides a good example of teamwork). Also, I coordinate what other people (commanding the work of other people) should do on their workplace in order to work according to quality standards (UNI EN ISO 9001).
I conduct audits at the various locations where we work, and make sure quality rules are followed. I work on new legislations and prepare new rules and make sure they are followed by employees. If they don't follow them, I prepare reports for the directors with my suggestions about what to do.
I take in account what the clients want and make sure the company follow the adequate rules to guarantee costumers satisfaction.

What do you think then? Does this job provide me with enough leadership and teamwork before a MBA?

Thanks a lot!

Andrea L.

Hi Andrea:

I think you have a good job--it's especially nice that you've been promoted since you've started working there as well.

You should start taking notes on past events when you were able to demonstrate leadership on the job. It might be good to do this digging into your past now so that you'll have some stories at your disposal when writing your apps.

Do you do any activities outside of work that demonstrate your leadership? Volunteering? I think that on-the-job leadership is very important, but some schools might like to see leadership in other activities as well to make sure the candidate is well rounded.

One other thing--have you lead any recruiting for work, or do you serve in any committees at work (i.e., social committee)? These might be other good examples of on-the-job leadership you could note in you application as well.

Best of luck!

Yes it is.. I am a QA Engineer which is less than a manager but b-schools still like it.
