If you want to continue in your current career path of software engineer, then an MBA might not be worth the resources. If you want to gain some business knowledge to transition to a management track or move to a business function within your technology company (like finance or marketing), then an MBA might be helpful in that endeavor. It all depends on what your goals are for your career; where do you want to go and be over the next 5, 10, 20 years??

Additionally, earning an MBA degree alone will not result in a career change or make an employer move an employee to a new job upon graduation from business school. How you leverage the MBA degree to further your career depends on you, first and foremost. You have to take ownership of your career and navigate the job search process, whether it is within your current company or with new companies, to secure that new opportunity.
