If your DT (Diagonistic Test-with zero knowledge) is 510, and have 3 (WHOLE) months to prepare, and do so religiously, you will have to Try to not touch 700.

510 is Good. You'll be fine.

I'm hardly a GMAT expert, but I'm confident you can. When I took my first Kaplan diagnostic about 6 - 9 months ago, I scored somewhere around 530. I studied for about 2 or 3 months, but ultimately didn't take the test because my job started to really kick my butt.

Since then I quit my job, moved to Arizona, got a better job and shelled out the cash to take Kaplan again. This time around I scored a 680 on my first practice CAT (skipped the diagnostic because I already took one). It might not be a 200 point increase, but my point is that's it's definitely possible. Once you've practiced solving for x in terms a y, studied the laws of exponents, and digested a whole bunch of other GMAT related information, you should see a signficant increase.

has anyone take the free Veritas Prep exam? How true are the scores given?

Yes, the Veritas exam is a good indicator. I took it myself and scored what I usually get on the real thing, and most of my students have said that their scores were pretty close, too.

Anyway, about improving: I'd say that it's optimistic but not unreasonable to go from 510 to 700. A lot of it depends on you, how much work you put in, your approach to studying, your aptitude for standardized tests, your math background, etc. etc. I've certainly had students go from 500s to 700s, so it's possible, but it takes a lot of work.
