In the xy-plane, the line k passes through the origin and through the point (a,b), where ab neq 0. Is b positive?

1) The slope of the line k is negative
2) a < b

it always helps to make a xy plane on a paper for these questions.

statement 1 : a negative slope line, passing throgh origin will go through Q2 and Q4. b will be +ve in Q2 and -ve in Q4. Not Suff.

statement 2 : a < b is set all the points to the left of the line y = x. This area will have half of Q1, whole Q2 and half of Q3. b will be +ve in Q1, Q2 and -ve in Q3. Not Suff

Combine 1 and 2 : we have only Q2. b will be +ve. Suff.

Answer is C
