Is area of square S less than 5 ?

Hey guys :) I have another translation related problem. Here is the question

Is the area of square region S less than 5 ?

(1) The area of S is less than the area of a circular region with radius 2.
(2) The area of S is greater than the area of a circular region with radius 1.

Based on my understanding of the question I answered D because I can calculate area of each circular area and thus compare it with 5. Looks like it's wrong because official answer claims E . Could you please explain why ? I'm still tripping with the dilemma whether I should always find positive answer on in Data Sufficiency questions or I just need to prove I can find ANY answer. I'm constantly making dumb mistakes because of this uncertainty :(

Yep it is E

Stmt 1 says that area of S is < area of circle with radius 2.

area of circle of radius 2 = 12.563.

So area of S is < 12.563. It could be less than 5 ==> yes
Or > 5 but still < 12.563.
So Insufficient.

Stmt 2
Says the same thing from a different angle.

area of circle with rad= 1.
is 3.14.
Now the area can be > 5 or less than 5 but still being > 3.14.
Hence insufficient.

Ans is E.
