Invest their money...

As more and more people invest their money in savings certificates or money-market
funds in order to earn higher interest, they are abandoning traditional low-interest
investment havens such as passbook accounts and life insurance policies.

(A) As more and more people invest their money
(B) While people have more and more been investing their money
(C) As money is more and more invested by people
(D) More and more, when investors put their money
(E) While, more and more, investors have been putting their money

OA A

This was posted before but not much explanation was given on the incorrect answer choices.

B - a very awkward construction, "more and more" inserted between two parts of the verb, also an incorrect verb form - Present Perfect Continuous is used to highlight that an action started in the past and lasts until now, however, this sentence speaks about a certain process in progress and does not concentrate on the fact how long it has lasted
C - unnecessary use of the passive
D - incorrectly inserted relative clause, it is not clear what "more and more" refers to
E - incorrect verb form and "more and more" incorrectly separated with commas from the subject "investors"

What is the OA?

My take -

A - WRONG. Should have been - As ... people invest ....., they abandon ......
B - CORRECT. Reason - since the non-underlined statement says 'they are abandoning' and not 'they abandon' we need to use present perfect continuous tense and not the simple present tense.
C - WRONG - We are not talking about money but about people.
D - WRONG - awkward construction that distorts the meaning.
E - WRONG - incorrectly puts 'more and more' within commas. distorts meaning

The OA is correct. Because people invest in other products they are abandoning the traditional products. The latter part of the sentence is dependent on the first of the sentence, hence we can use verb-ing here.
You can, for example never foretell what any one man will do, but you can say with precision what an average number will be up to!

Hi Pal22,

"-ing" verbs tend to be used in what we call "timeless" situations. The "intent" of the original sentence is that people abandoned traditional investments in the past, people are abandoning them now and people are likely to abandon them in the future. This "timeless" situation (past, present and future) is the clue to use an "-ing" verb. Thus, the original sentence is fine the way it is.

For answer B, the phrase "While people have more and more..." doesn't have proper grammar "structure."
