Hi,

I wonder if you might be able to give some advice.

I've been invited to interview at a B-School for which I never thought I stood a chance (Chicago).

As a Londoner (UK) I'm considering going to Chicago to interview with AdCom rather than risk a bad experience with an alumni interview in London. Of course it means I also get to see the campus, and fingers crossed get to make a more informed decision later on.

I guess I'm concerned that alumni interviews are fraught with pitfalls and many people seem to have commented on this over time. Given I have the option of going to Chicago (expensive but I can easily get the time off) I'm wondering whether it is worth it.

Any thoughts?

Dear Anoop:

I definitely think it is worthwhile to go to Chicago for the interview if you can--for all the reasons you mention except alumni interviews are a negative. Alumni interviews are not a bad thing nor should they put you at a disadvantage. But if you think you can go in person, combine with a class visit, and it is at the top of your school list, it would be a worthwhile investment for you in order to make the most educated decision later. Plus, it shows the admissions committee you are highly committed to earning your MBA and Chicago is at the top of your list.

I asked a few of my friends on this too (all MBA's and one a former admissions fellow). Everyone had the same advice.

Guess I'll be in Chicago next week! Very much looking forward to it.
