for example, the 1992 Olympic Games were financially successful

like the financial success of the 1992 Olympic Games demonstrates

a fact demonstrated by the 1992 Olympic Games, which were financially successful

as the financial success of the 1992 Olympic Games demonstrates

what is the problem with option D here
i narrowed it down to D and E but then on a second h=thought i selected D because becasue it is less jumbled and conveys the meaning [/spoiler]

--> run on/commasplice
for example, the 1992 Olympic Games were financially successful
--> run on/ commasplice
like the financial success of the 1992 Olympic Games demonstrates

a fact demonstrated by the 1992 Olympic Games, which were financially successful
--> meaning changed
as the financial success of the 1992 Olympic Games demonstrates
--> correct

ohk i got it u mean to say that in option D

'were' actually refers to 1992 olympic games and which happened only once
so it should be singular ....

main issue is meaning change: i.e

"International sporting events need not be fiscal disasters" is described further by the success of olympic games NOT alone by olympic games as in D. Moreover, olympic games should be singular as demonstrated by the correct option E.

Moreover, olympic games should be singular as demonstrated by the correct option E.

I don't think 'the 1992 Olympic games' is singular in E. 'demonstrates' is referring to 'success', which is singular.

My question is 'the 1992 Olympic games' should be singular or plural. I think it should be plural.

There are only one way to join two clause : using a connector. It can take any form and shape signifying the relationship between clauses. Eliminate A and D.

C is wrong - as "like" is a preposition and cannot be proceeded by a clause.
Here, only E has one. The usage of "as".

yeah you are right its "success" that decides "demonstrates", As far as olympic games is concerned its not deciding factor in this question.

In the extreme case "1992 Olympic games" should be considered singular because its collective.
