Please help with this one:

Instead of buying stocks and bonds, which are the conventional approach for someone new to financial planning, real estate has become increasingly the choice of young people as a first investment.

A) buying stocks and bonds, which are the conventional approach for someone new to financial planning, real estate has become increasingly the choice of young people

B) buying stocks and bonds, which are the conventional approach for those new to financial planning, increasingly young people have shown a choice for real estate

C) buying stocks and bonds, which are the conventional approach for someone new to financial planning, the choice of young people increasingly has become real estate

D) buying stocks and bonds, which are the conventional investments for those new to financial planning, young people have increasingly chosen real estate

E)stocks and bonds, which are the conventional approach for those new to financial planning, young people have shown an increasing choice of real estate

Hi mankey--

It's a little tough to do this without the underlining...

At first we thought that the answer was E, as that seemed to be the only one that has the correct subject/verb agreement on the "which" clause.

One way to solve this is to flip it around to a more linear construction:

Young people have shown... instead of...

It's easier to evaluate the grammar that way. The problem with E is that "an increasing choice" doesn't make any sense. So we then eliminated that.

Next we considered D as the only other that has appropriate subject/verb agreement on that "which" clause... and we ended up there. The other three have a messed-up S/V combo. We think that D is the answer.

Did you have a specific question on the "Instead of..." construction?

Clearly, D is the winner!
first of all, "stocks and bonds" are not approach, but investments.
second of all, "buying" is referring to "young people".
third of all, "have chosen" is superior to " have shown a choice" or "have shown an increasing choice".

Are you sure about this question, what is the source ?

I do not think D can be the answer as "instead of" is used only for nouns, here in D - "buying stocks and bonds" is an action. So I looked for E.

E - "Stocks and bonds" cannot be an approach, "buying stocks and bonds" can be an approach. It is also wrong.

D would be correct if we replace "instead of" with "rather than"

What is the source of this question ?????

1. Why do you say that "instead of" can be used only for nouns? Never heard this before, please explain.
2. Regardless, "buying" in this instance is a gerund, is it not? And thus, a noun.

Yes !! In D "buying" is an Gerund. I was wrong.

But how can in D -- young people "have" is right.
