(A)x<500 => 450 < x < 500 alone not sufficient
(B)y<400 => 350 < y < 400 alone not sufficient
A and B taken together:
800 < x+y < 900 => not sufficient as x+y can take a value from two different cases of 'less than 850' or 'more than 850', due to which the answers differ.
Answer "E"
