inequality question

Hi Everyone,
I am working on an inequalities question that involves the following inequality:

x + 3 < n – 1

In the answer exlanation the inequality is converted to the following:
x + n < 2n – 4

When doing the math I see how these 2 inequalities are equal, but how would I quickly know that x + 3 < n – 1 is equal to x + n < 2n – 4 without wasting time on the problem?

Any help/suggestions would be great.

Lakers,

All they have done is move the 3 from LHS(lefthand side) to RHS and add n to both sides.

x<n-4 is valid also.

If I add n to both sides I will get

x+n<2n-4


When u add or subtract anything to the 2 sides of the inequality the
inequality sign does not change but if you mutiply or divide the inequality by a negative number(both sides) then the inequality reverses.
