In triangle ABC, point X is the midpoint of side AC and point Y is the midpoint of side BC. If point R is the midpoint of line segment XC and if point S is the midpoint of line segment YC, what is the area of triangular region RCS ?
(1) The area of triangular region ABX is 32.
(2) The length of one of the altitudes of triangle ABC is 8.

i go with A. and area of RCS is 4.

the 2 mid point ones are simiollar

but abx ?


axb is 32 so trapezium axyb is 64



and then.. u can find triangle is rcs
A is suff

Altitude with help , so b is insuff
a is ans

I've attached a picture of the solution. What I don't get is what they mean by the triangles are similar since their corresponding interior angles have the same measure. How do we know that? Thanks.

Hey!

I came across this question in the MGMAT:

If Pool Y currently contains more water than Pool X, and if Pool X is currently filled to 2/7 of its capacity, what percent of the water currently in Pool Y needs to be transferred to Pool X if Pool X and Pool Y are to have equal volumes of water?

(1) If all the water currently in Pool Y were transferred to Pool X, Pool X would be filled to 6/7 of its capacity.

(2) Pool X has a capacity of 14,000 gallons.

Any suggestions on the answer. Have a go at it. Will post the answer after I receive a few responses.

I'm posting the 2nd part of the solution. Now I understand why the triangles are similar but is there any quick way to do this problem? It took me a long long time to figure this problem out.

Almost impossible to solve given the time limits on the exam.

It says in the provided solution that "BF, YG, and SH are perpendicular to AC". How can you assume that this is true? What if you didn't draw your triangle the way that they did? You can't assume that dropping a line from any corner of a triangle will result in a 90 degree angle.
