In the figure above, lines \(a\) and \(b\) are parallel. What is \(x?\)

A) 9
B) 18
C) 36
D) 45
E) 54

Answer: E

Solution:

We see that x = 6y and 2y + 3x = 180. Therefore, we have:

2y + 3(6y) = 180

20y = 180

y = 9

Since y = 9 and x = 6y, x = 6(9) = 54.

Answer: E
